The Buzz about BB Creams

I recently had a makeover at the Dior counter, and the makeup artist used DiorSnow BB Cream as my sunscreen. Then I started seeing BB creams advertised on TV. So the scientist in me took over and I asked “What is this BB cream stuff?” So I did a little online research and here’s what I found.

BB cream (Blemish Balm or Beauty Balm) was first designed by a physician in Germany to soothe the skin of post-peel and laser surgery patients. It protected the skin and lessened the redness. Then the Koreans discovered it and Korean celebrities used it to even out their skin tone. It rapidly spread throughout Asia and is now it’s one of the “in” products in the US.

So just what is it? It’s an all-in-one product. It’s moisturizer, sunscreen, and serum all in one. It has a bit of color to it and some brands come in more than one shade. It can contain anti-aging or skin lightening components. The Dior brand claims to brighten the skin. It can be used alone or as a primer for foundation.

Do I like it? YES! In fact, I drove 45 minutes from Los Altos to San Francisco to buy another tube, because my local Nordstrom was out of it and I wanted it for my vacation in Maui. It has an SPF of 50 which is great for my fair skin. It’s quite water-resistant and stays on all day. And it does a good job of calming the redness of my rosacea. I wear it alone when walking the dog, on the beach, or a quiet day at home. And I use it as a primer for my foundation when I’m doing the whole makeup routine. Since I’m getting older and my skin is getting dryer, I do use an additional moisturizer under the BB cream.

My advise? It’s worth a try. Do some research and find the one that has the extra ingredients you need and the shade that’s right for you. Report back and let me know how it works for you.
